Spring Break

Three days from now we will be headed to Florida for almost 10 days. We are going to all 4 Disney parks with are good friend Tess and spending days in Jacksonville and Daytona Beach. We are going to be checking out Courtney’s future school and doing some apartment shopping as well.

I am so excited to see the beach and meet Micky and ride all the rides. I haven’t been to Disney since I was 5 so it will almost be like my first time. Courtney’s Aunt Beth is awesome and hooked us up with some of her Marriot points so we are staying in this great hotel with a couch and kitchen and the whole bit. It is going to be amazing!

We will be posting from Florida so you can see pictures and stuff. Only 3 days!

This movie looks absolutely amazing! I can not wait to see it.

Wet Shaving

Wet shaving is the common term for shaving with a safety razor or straight razor. It is growing in popularity recently and for some good reasons too. I had been following those reasons for a little while and my good buddie Luke really got me interested in it.

As I finished up Whiskerino I decided that I wanted to start shaving with a safety razor and I absolutely love it. Here is why:

A Better Shave: Everyone on the Internet said this was true but I didn’t really believe it until I tried. Before when I would shave I always got irritation right on my neck, but since I started using a safety razor, it has completely stopped.
Cost Effective: a good condition safety razor on eBay is less than $20. I got a near perfect 60’s era Gillette Super Speed for $18 with shipping. Blades are about $15 for 60 blades. Soap is 1.50. A brush is about $7. You can get everything you need to get started for under $50. A Gillette Mach III is almost $15 and only comes with three blades. Blade refills are $15 for 3. It adds up quickly. In about 3 months you will equal what a safety razor set-up will cost for an entire year.
Shave like your Grandpa: Admit it, it’s pretty darn cool shaving with a brush, soap, and a metal safety razor. It just feels manly and harks to a time when men were gentleman who could fix a car and take their lady out to a formal dinner all in the same day.
Speaking of Ladies: Girls, tell me you wouldn’t be attracted to a guy who takes the time, patience, and care every morning to give himself a proper shave. Maybe, just maybe it is an indication of the time, patience, and care that he will give to you. Not to mention he will have the best shave he has ever had so he will look great as well.
Time Consuming: This may sound like a disadvantage at first, and sometimes it can be. But shaving can be a great time of concentration and preparation for the upcoming day. It takes about 10-20 mins for me to shave but I get to think and pray about my day the entire time. I look forward to it every morning. Sometimes in life we get in such a hurry to do everything that we forget to enjoy the simple things. It’s easy to just take a Mach III or an electric razor and get all the hair off your face, but it’s much more rewarding to enjoy the smells, the feel, and the time of meditation when enjoying a good shave.

Disadvantages.

Time Consuming: As I mentioned before, this is normally a good thing, but every once in awhile when I am running late, this can be a disadvantage

Wet-shaving may not be for everyone, but I highly recommend at least giving it a try. It’s cheaper, it gives you a better shave, it looks and feels amazing, and your lady will love it.

I just finished watching this movie and it is one of the smartest, saddest, most amazing sci-fi movies I have ever seen. Sam Rockwell’s acting is outstanding and Kevis Spacey as the voice of the main robot was an amazing choice. The way the embraced classic sci-fi and put their own twist on it is perfect.

That said, in Christian circles, the whole game gets confusing. Christians rightly affirm Godliness, theological accuracy, Biblical literacy, morality and zeal. So the Christian learns from an early age that if he has these characteristics, a jury of his peers will affirm him. And as well they should. But the problem comes when the opinion of the jury replaces the redemption we find in God.

This post rocked my world this morning. I am so guilty of this.

So What's Next?

Whiskerino officially ended two days ago. I really feel like a new mini-chapter in my life has just ended. I know that probably sounds a little over-dramatic to those of you not directly involved with it, but Whiskerino took a great deal of my time and creative energy. It was a ton of fun and incredibly rewarding. A lot is different now that it is over.

Other than the fact that I look completely different without a beard, I am also not sure what to do creatively now. With Whiskerino I always had a project to be working on. There was always a theme day to shoot or a different way to shoot my beard. Now that it is over I am trying to figure out what I want my next “project” to be. I have considered doing a 365 project, or maybe 52 weeks project, but I want something with more of a theme. Maybe Ill shoot only B/W or something like that.

I definitely want to start taking my friends out to practice my portrait photography. I also want to start shooting couples to start practicing for engagement shoots and stuff.

Anyways, I am rambling. This was just my attempt at saying that I am working on another creative project, I am just not sure what it is yet.

I decided I wanted to shave with only manual tools when I shaved my beard off, so I used scissors to get it short (though I need some help from Courtney for this) and then used a 1920’s Gillette safety razor to shave the rest of the beard.

I am a bit sad to see it go, though I am enjoying being clean again.

This picture is a recreation of my first Whiskerino picture. Courtney has helped take pictures, encourage me, and dealt with my beard for the last four months and she definitely deserves to be at both ends of this crazy beard growing adventure.

This is it! Whiskerino is over. I looked forward to this for two years and Whiskerino has been everything I thought it would be.

I loved getting to know some of you guys and following your lives for four months.

I am so happy with the connections I have made and look forward to getting to know you better as time goes on.
